Christmas markets in Croatia

Posted .

We are grateful to our friend and colleague in Croatia, Filipa Marusic for her Guest Blog, showing her local knowledge and experience about Christmas markets in Croatia.

To prove Croatia is a not only about sun and sea, each year,  the biggest Croatian destinations are doing their best to bring  attract visitors to the unique Christmas markets.

The place to be is definitely Zagreb which was recently voted the best Christmas market destination in Europe 2016.

This year, almost every part of the City Centre is decorated and has various events and activities on offer ranging from ice skating rink to live music, shows and a great choice of traditional Christmas food and drinks.

Croatian foods to try are traditional “fritule” (deep fried and sweet, similar to a donut without the hole!) , various meats and sausage selections, mulled wine and traditional rakija.

The second biggest city in Croatia and one of the most popular tourist destinations during summer, Split, has a fun atmosphere and its Christmas market is right on the main promenade Riva.   With lovely “kućice” – food and drink stands where everybody is enjoying street food whilst soaking up the winter sun or enjoying the mild evenings. Christmas market in Split is also to be found on the popular City squares like Pjaca and Prokurative.  Also, in the part of Diocletian’s palace called Get – here,  enjoy themed dinners, traditional food and mulled wine.

Other towns in Croatia have markets of their own, but these two are well worth a visit. With the no frills airlines not so visible during this season, Croatia maybe harder to reach at this time of the year, but once you get there you will definitely want to stay.
